THE REALLY GOOD STUFF

Now, I didn’t always have this skill. In fact,

I’ve taught a lot of bad lessons.

You see, I started where you are now. New to teaching and creating courses.

I loved it, but it didn’t always go well. I cried in my car a lot.

Turns out, wrangling 100+ teens as a fresh-faced college grad is no easy task. I’d stand in front of 30 sets of eyeballs wondering, “Who the hell put me in charge of these people?”

So I worked hard to get my students results... Sometimes at the cost of my own sanity. Even when I totally nailed a unit on tragic heroes comparing Macbeth and Star Wars, I’d immediately start sketching out a list of what I could have done better.

And the lessons that weren’t so great…? You’d have thought I was Lady Macbeth with blood all over my hands.

My friends told me to chill out. That didn’t help. Because I knew I was doing "fine" but I wanted to be even better. Without staying at school until the lights shut off. What can I say? I'm an Enneagram 1.

So, I white-knucked my first year and collapsed come summer. Then I thought about the fall. Could I do it all again? I had a decision to make.

Figure out a way to be great and manage the work. Or squander the time, energy, and soul I had already invested into my courses.

I chose the former.

And asked for help.

 

I collaborated more with experienced teachers who could give me feedback and perspective on my work.

And worked out a system to organize, develop, and enhance my curriculum.

 

Sure enough,

my courses got better.

And I became the educator I wanted to be.
